Straw Bale Gardening

Have you heard of straw bale gardening?  Probably not but it is becoming more and more popular.  Some of the benefits include less disease and insects, very few weeds, and you can’t overwater.  Since you are gardening on top of bales of hay you are essentially creating raised bed gardens.  Therefore you are reaping the benefits of raised bed gardeners.  So those gardeners that have trouble bending over or have back injuries can really benefit from straw bale gardening.

As the straw breaks down the decomposition causes the release of heat.  This release of heat can help crops and lets you start crops earlier.  In addition you can put a cover over your crop to keep even more heat close to the plants.  This is especially beneficial to gardeners in the colder northern climates.  This allows them to get a head start on the gardening season that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to enjoy.

If you live in an area that has very poor soil instead of trying to improve the soil which may take several years you can have a successful garden right away by growing your garden in straw.  Read more..
