Pruning Pines in the Spring

Now is the time to prune any pine trees you might have.  They probably have just started growing and that is the best time to prune them.  The branches are still flexible and pale thus making it easier to prune them.  You will need to prune your white pines to achieve the ideal shape that you are looking for.  Do no skip a season or you may destroy the shape and your tree might require heavy pruning which is not good.  It is recommended to not use shears as that might damage surrounding branches but instead to pinch the candle(new growth) between your thumb and forefinger.  Your goal should be to pinch back fifty percent of the new growth.  Read more…
