Gardening Improves Your Body and Mind

Healthcare professionals agree that gardening can improve your health.  You not only reap the benefits of consuming the healthy vegetables you grow but you receive the benefit of relaxing your mind.  It has been proven that you are more likely that you will consume healthy food if you grow it yourself.  When you buy vegetables in the store you may or may not enjoy eating them, but when you grow them yourself you have a sense of accomplishment and this makes it more likely that you will consume healthy vegetables.

In a recent study that was published in the American Journal of Public Health it showed that 56 percent of community gardeners consumed the recommended amount of vegetables and fruit. By contrast only 25 percent of non-gardeners consumed the recommended amount of vegetables and fruits.  Healing gardens can help those that are effected by anxiety, depression, stress, and dementia.   Gardening can help those with depression because it is a way for them to get out of their fixed mental state.  Horticulture therapy helps people that can’t sleep because of stress or other sleeping issues.
