Do Onions Flower?

Have you ever seen an onion flower?  Onions are biennials which means in the first year they will product bulbs but in the second year they will flower.  Quick changes in spring weather from cool to hot can cause an onion to flower.  If your onions do start to flower make sure you harvest them immediately because they won’t last long.  To reduce the chances of onions flowering make sure that you are growing varieties that will do well in your region and your climate.  There are both “long day” onions that are better suited to northern latitudes and “short day” onions that do better in the south.  The smaller the onion the less likely they are to bolt and go to seed.  Read more...
